My Printmaking Creative Process
I make every print by hand from start to finish. First, I carve the design into a linoleum block using sharp gouges — capturing the fluid movement of a body cutting through water took many attempts to get right. When it’s ready, I use a brayer to roll a thin, even layer of ink across the block, and carefully lay a sheet of acid-free paper on top. Then I apply pressure — sometimes using a glass baren, sometimes a wooden spoon, sometimes a printing press. The final step is peeling back the paper to reveal the art. Magic! My hands are involved in every single step. Because of this, every print carries its own small variations — tiny imperfections that make it genuinely yours, not mass-produced.
Open Water Swimmer Linocut Print Inspiration
Have you ever slipped below the surface and felt the world go quiet? There’s a particular kind of freedom in open water swimming — no lane ropes, no clock on the wall, just you and the cold and the dark blue below.
I carved this print thinking about that moment of surrender. The second you stop fighting the water and start moving with it. The lines in linocut are perfect for capturing movement — the way a body cuts through water, the ripple left behind, the sense of going somewhere unknown and trusting the stroke.
This print might live in the home of a wild swimmer, a triathlete, or simply someone who finds peace near the sea. Wherever it lands, I hope it carries a little of that feeling with it.
Please note: product images are for orientation purposes only. Colours may differ slightly due to monitor calibration, and paper size or texture may vary slightly. As each print is hand-printed, slight variations and differences between individual prints are to be expected — these are part of the handmade character and what makes your print uniquely yours.
